"Our Village and the Great War" has an extract from the Bury Free Press of 25th August 1917:-
Sometime since a report was received that Private A. Leonard of St Andrew's Street, Mildenhall, had been wounded but from a subsequent report it now appears that he was killed in action on July 23rd. Private Leonard was an employee of W.G.Mothersole of this town before he joined up. Much sympathy is felt for his widow".

The 8th East Surrey's left Chateua Segard to take up positions in trenches in the Zillebeke area on 16th July. The war diary for 23rd has :-
"Artillery activity on both sides was considerably increased, at times developing into intense bombardment. Enemy aircraft displayed normal activity. Patrols under 2/Lts Riddett, Dawson and Shrapnel went out during the night with intention of examining the enemy wire and defences, and if possible, to secure identification. The enemy front line in front of the battalion Sector was found to be unoccupied, but no identifications were secured.Information was received during the day that the Battn. would be relieved by the 2nd Bedfords on the night of 23/24th inst.
Casualties : O.R. Kd.2. Wd.3".

CWGC records 7 of the 8th East Surrey's killed but one of these died of his wounds at Lijessnthoek at the CCS. Since the other six are named on the Menin Gate, it is quite possible that exact dates were not known.
